Business Development Director - Renewables

Work Location: Beijing/Shanghai, China

Reporting To: China BD Head, ACWA Power China

Job Overview

The Senior Business Development role will be responsible for driving ACWA Power’s growth in the renewable energy sector within China. The role requires a strong focus on building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, developing strategies for market entry, and leading business development initiatives. A background in State Grid is essential, as the candidate will leverage this experience to navigate regulatory environments and establish strategic partnerships.

Job Responsibilities

  • Market Strategy: Develop and implement the renewable energy business strategy for China, particularly in wind, solar, and hydrogen projects. This includes identifying market opportunities, evaluating potential projects, and conducting feasibility studies.
  • Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with public and private sector stakeholders, including government agencies, regulatory bodies, and local partners. Leverage prior experience with State Grid to facilitate approvals and partnerships.
  • Project Pipeline Development: Identify and assess renewable energy projects at different stages of development. Aim to build a project pipeline to meet the company’s long-term capacity goals.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in power grid industry , with at least 3 years in a business development role in renewable energy industry.
  • Essential: Experience working with or for State Grid (or China South Grid), with a strong understanding of China’s power grid infrastructure and regulatory framework.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or related fields; advanced degree (MBA or related) is a plus.

Central Technical Services Manager-Wind

Work Location: Shanghai, China

Reporting To: Head of Wind – Central Technical Services Renewables


Responsibilities

Technical bid development:

  •   Evaluate different equipment options based on the durability, reliability, efficiency, availability of spare parts, warranties, and cost and provide recommendations to feed into the bid package.
  • Conduct thorough technical feasibility studies to assess the local/site conditions in order to determine the most optimal and safest way to respond to the bid.
  • Design the key engineering elements required for the bid including aspects related to the selection of key equipment, equipment configuration, equipment provider, cost comparisons etc., and provide different scenarios to ensure the BD team have all the required technical input and options they need for submission and further negotiation.
  • WindPro/Openwind simulations to calculate annual performance and basic configuration of the Wind farm under design providing support to BD during development stage.
  • Owner Technical Specification (OTS) gate keeper. Coordination with other disciplines and update this document based on lesson learnt from project under execution and operation.
  • Technical appendices of the EPC Contract preparation (Performance Guarantees, Testing and Commissioning, Layout, Interfaces,….) coordination with other disciplines and Project Execution Oversight (PEO) department.

Technical Bid Presentations:

  • Present the technical part of the bid to the internal senior management highlighting the key risks, opportunities, technical design, recommended equipment partners and contractors, risk mitigation strategies, cost-benefit analyses etc., to ensure all the key elements are raised and discussed in a timely and efficient manner. 

Technical Services:

  • Support the Project Directors by reviewing the designs and engineering drawings prepared by the EPC contractors ensuring that the designs are as per the specifications and providing critical input to improvise wherever applicable. 
  • Review, monitor and analyse the technical data from the operating plants and the track record of equipment failures, input the feedback back into the bid-preparation stage, to ensure all the learnings are captured and improved upon and any risks are mitigated at an early stage.

Technical expertise:

  • Act as a centre of expertise in a particular field of engineering, sharing technical know-how with them team, providing technical insights and best practices and having technical discussions with team members, consultants, vendors, and contractors to ensure their knowledge is leveraged for the best interest of the organisation.
  • Transfer knowledge from the tendering team to the EPC Contractors / Asset Management team, verifying the tender and achieving scope stability and handover.
  • Provide guidance and specialist technical expertise to EPC Contractor / NOMAC in order to enable them to solve complex engineering problems in a timely and efficient manner.
  • In the operations phase, monitor and negotiate the terms for the equipment configuration, maintenance and warranties with the vendors and ensure the equipment is delivered as per the specifications.
  • Performance analysis and benchmarking of the Wind plants under operation.
  • Design and management of Power Performance Test as per IEC and MEASNET guidelines and standards.
  • Post-construction analysis and benchmarking of the WIND plants under operation or for acquisition using SCADA data.
  • Conduct design reviews with contractors and consultants, in coordination with the specialist and other team members
  • RCA analysis and coordination with Project Company and Nomac to determine the root cause and implementation of the right solutions in the project under operation for important events.

Evaluation of New Technology:

  • Evaluate new technologies related to the sector by assessing which are most feasible from a scalability, bankability and commercial perspective and provide recommendations to the senior management.
  • Monitor and conduct research in specialised fields/disciplines to maintain awareness of new developments in the field and industry best practices in order to define, design and advice solutions which are most applicable to the business.

Document Management System:

  • Manage the registration, classification, storage, version control, tracking, filing and transmission of electronic files and physical paper copies, engineering and project papers, licenses and other controlled documents as required by the function.
  • Provide adequate training and assistance to the users of the intranet to help them understand the features related to uploading, capturing, and locating electronic information.

Administrative support:

  • Conduct basic data entry and processing tasks as required by the team to increase overall efficiency.
  • Update all the software and apply for license renewals in a timely manner ensuring all the relevant documentation and approvals are in place as per the required standards.
